Healthcare Patients are not happy about coming to your hospital, medical office, or healthcare facility.

| How much is your environment contributing to patients’ unhappiness? Probably more than you realize. Researchers at Texas A&M and Georgia Tech reviewed 600 scientific studies to find that the "conventional hospital design contributes to patient stress and danger." Research done by Dr. Morris found the same to be true of medical, dental, and laboratory settings. |

| Whether it is a hospital or a doctor’s office, each aspect of the setting has a dual job description: what task(s) are to be done in the room, and what emotion should the room stir? For example, a patient’s room has a different job description than an exam room or a waiting room. Determining the job description enables you to address the practical and the psychological needs of a given space. |

Why hasn't this approach been applied to hospital and other healthcare settings?
Our Puritan heritage is part of the reason: we focus on the practical utilitarian nature of many things, including healthcare, and minimize the psychological side of the equation. We speak about a doctor’s bedside manner, but we haven’t begun to think enough about the manner of the bed or bedside manner of the healthcare setting itself. As we become aware of the affect a setting has on us, we will begin to require such supportive settings for ourselves and our loved ones.
Psychology of Setting uses The Holon Model™ for Healthcare Environments of all sizes.
We offer a comprehensive review and analysis of what is needed to insure a high level of efficient cost-contained patient care and patient satisfaction. Recommendations are mapped out in actionable form to be put into place immediately and/or over time as the budget and staffing permits. Staff training and education is an optional part of this process. Better patient outcomes are only part of the benefit of a supportive healthcare environment; healthcare professionals and staffers are happy in such environments as well.
